I use FP4 and HP5 rated at nominal speed as standard films and Rodinal as a standard developper, usually diluted at 1+50.

To be honest, I was a little disappointed with the indoor shot on film stock, even though it was pushed one stop to ASA800; perhaps I needed the flash more. My

I tried pushing some Portra 400 to 800 and developed as normal and it was not good. I should have developed a little longer. A good lab should be able to handle this for you, but you will need to let them know you pushed the film. With developing black and white at home, it's a little easier.

Nominally rated at ISO 400, it yields negatives of outstanding sharpness and fine grain under all lighting conditions. HP5 PLUS has been formulated to respond well to push processing and film speeds up to EI 3200/36 are achievable with ILFORD MICROPHEN developer maintaining good shadow detail and well separated mid-tones with sharp grain.

Probably my favorite way to shoot Ilford HP5 Plus is to shoot it and develop it at 800. It gives you a wider range of blacks, whites, and grays, and your images have more contrast and more grain. Rated and developed at 800 Rated and developed at 800 Pushing it two stops (shooting and developing at 1600) intensifies the contrast and grain even more.

I had been working lately pushing Hp5 in TMX developer, solution 1+4 for the moment.I pushed to 800 and 1600, and even at 400. resulting in very good quality and outstanding shadow detail , far more than I expected. The downside, was, that my neg were a bit dense. probably the times ilford recomended are too long. I will try next time 10% less.

Kent, while HP5+ will handle 800 easily, you might also consider T-Max 400. TMY is probably my favorite film for pushing, even over Tri-X. I've routinely abused TMY up to 1600, even in daylight and contrasty theatrical stage and concert lighting and it holds up remarkably well. And the grain is finer than pushed HP5+.
